They are separate hostnames and each needs a certificate that covers it. A common setup has a valid certificate on www.example.com and none on example.com, so half your visitors see a warning.
Most registrar forwarding services only handle plain HTTP. They don’t issue a certificate for your domain, so https:// requests fail with a name mismatch or no certificate at all.
The server answered with a certificate issued for a different hostname, often the registrar’s own parking or forwarding domain. Browsers treat that as unsafe and block the page.
