Use 301 for a permanent move. It passes SEO value to the new URL. Use 302 or 307 only when the old URL will come back, for example during maintenance. 308 is a permanent redirect that keeps the request method, which matters for forms and APIs.
Apache rules go in the .htaccess file in your site root. Nginx rules go inside the server block of your site config. Vercel rules go in vercel.json, Netlify rules in a _redirects file in your publish folder, and the Cloudflare CSV is uploaded under Bulk Redirects as a list.

A duplicate means two rules share the same source path, so only one will apply. A loop means a URL eventually redirects back to itself. A chain means a URL redirects to another URL that redirects again. Point it straight at the final destination instead.
