What Is Domain Transfer?

A domain transfer moves a domain's registration from one registrar to another — for example, moving example.com from GoDaddy to Namecheap. This changes who manages the domain's registration and billing, not necessarily its DNS.

Why It Matters

People often confuse “domain transfer” with “domain forwarding.” They’re completely different:

ActionWhat ChangesWhat Stays
Domain transferRegistration moves to new registrarDomain name, DNS records (usually)
Domain forwardingDNS points to redirect serviceRegistration stays at current registrar

You do not need to transfer a domain to forward it. Just change DNS records at your current registrar.

How Domain Transfers Work

  1. Unlock the domain at your current registrar
  2. Get the EPP/auth code from the current registrar
  3. Initiate the transfer at the new registrar, providing the auth code
  4. Confirm the transfer via email (both registrars send confirmations)
  5. Wait 5-7 days for the transfer to complete
  6. Domain is now at the new registrar — manage DNS, renewals, etc. there

When to Transfer vs When to Just Forward

ScenarioBest Action
Unhappy with registrar pricingTransfer to cheaper registrar
Want better DNS managementTransfer (or change nameservers only)
Old domain needs to redirect to new domainJust forward it — no transfer needed
Consolidating domains at one registrarTransfer, then optionally set up forwarding

How Domain Forward Handles This

Domain Forward never requires a domain transfer. Keep your domain at Namecheap, GoDaddy, Porkbun, or wherever it is. Update two DNS records and you’re done.
