What Is EPP Code (Auth Code)?

An EPP code (also called authorization code, auth code, or transfer key) is a unique password assigned to a domain that's required to transfer it between registrars. It prevents unauthorized transfers.

Why It Matters

EPP codes are a security feature that prevents someone from stealing your domain by transferring it without your permission. Every domain transfer requires this code — without it, the receiving registrar can’t process the transfer.

How It Works

  1. You request the EPP code from your current registrar
  2. The registrar provides a unique string (like x7K#mP!9qR2w)
  3. You give this code to the new registrar when initiating the transfer
  4. The new registrar verifies the code with the registry
  5. Transfer proceeds (typically 5-7 days)

EPP Code vs Domain Forwarding

These are commonly confused, but they serve different purposes:

Domain Forward never requires an EPP code. You keep your domain at its current registrar and just update DNS records.

asked questions

No. EPP codes are only for domain transfers — moving registration between registrars. Domain forwarding just requires DNS record changes at your current registrar.
